Good Roadside Eating

Months ago, Case and I mocked a restaurant here, because it’s named El Palacio de los Frijoles. The Palace of Beans came across as a bit too regal for what seemed to us just another chain restaurant here in Colombia. Well, guess what? Now it’s one of our favorite stops when driving out to the campo. Their breakfast featuring calentao – beans and rice mixed together – is fantastic, as is their guanabana juice, made from the actual fruit and not the prepackaged pulp (we asked). Also, they cook all their food over a wood-burning stove, and we often sit at the table right in front of it, to maximally enjoy the campesino ambience. I’ve posted a photo below, as well as a video of Case, at another roadside stop, thrilled to have just acquired our favorite breakfast (arequipe and guava pastries).

That’s not a window in the background. The whole place is open-air, really without any walls at all.
