Casey and I have become mapmakers in the past few months. This is not something we planned, but once we got here, and started doing our own surveys, we realized how cool (and useful) it would be to map the data we got from each of the veredas (big rural neighborhoods that comprise the municipalities). However, upon making this realization, we also figured out that finding a map we could easily manipulate was not possible. So we dug in our heels. I downloaded a free photoshop-like program (called Gimp), learned how to use it, and started deconstructing and reconstructing the maps we do have access to. Once I got the hang of it, I taught Casey the basics, so now she’s a cartographer, too. Here’s a sample of what we’ve been able to create:
Anyway, that’s the scoop for tonight. We’re headed to the campo bright and early tomorrow morning, and staying through Sunday.
